EXAMPLES OF 2018 LATE BREAKERS

NE-2 (Kara Eastman for Congress)

After a shocking upset in the Democratic primary over former Congressman Brad Ashford, few national Democrats targeted this race in the fall. In the closing weeks of the campaign Republicans invested more than $2 million to protect their incumbent Congressman. By the time Democrats could respond the Republican’s solidified their lead and Eastman ultimately lost by less than 5,000 votes (or less than 2%).

TX-24 (Jan McDowell for Congress)

Kenny Marchant was first elected to Congress from a suburban Dallas district in 2004. For more than a decade he faced only token opposition. In 2018 he outspent the Democratic nominee by more than 10:1. Even with all of that money, he was held to just 50% of the vote. No one expected this race to be that close. Even a modest investment by independent expenditures could have flipped this seat. Now, just two years later, Marchant is not running for reelection making the seat vulnerable for the Republicans.
